Your brain is an organ that coordinates the activities of the nervous system. Many people compare the functioning of the brain to a computer. Unlike a computer though, instead of linear processes, a brain uses lateral and associative thinking to allow simultaneous processing, making the human mind more creative and complex. Although the brain (which only weighs about 3 pounds) is a processing organ, it is so much more complex than that. Emotions and “feelings of the heart” are processed through the brain.

Those who don’t agree with the computer/brain analogy will point out the differences between parallel and serial processing. Computers are serial, human brains function in parallel. https://www.dnalc.org/view/1194-Brain-as-Parallel-Processor.html
The brainstem is the messaging center, controlling all the functions in your body. Breathing, digestion and the circulation of blood are all needed for survival. Your organs function and depend on the brain’s messages. Information is quickly processed in the brain; computers are much slower.

Disorders or diseases of the brain restrict proper function. Certain mental illnesses such as depression can also disable the brain’s function. Neurologists diagnose and treat conditions relating to the brain and nervous system. Through training and research, they are able to properly diagnose and treat the illnesses and diseases that deprive normal functioning of the brain.
Thomas Heric served as Assistant House Physician at the National Hospital for Nervous and Mental Diseases, Queen Square London, England from July 1969 to December 1970.
