Thomas Heric - Disorders of the Brain

Thomas Heric is a neurologist. He received four years of training at Brain Research Institute (BRI) at University of California Los Angeles and received his Ph.D. in neurophysiology.

Your brain is an organ that coordinates the activities of the nervous system. Many people compare the functioning of the brain to a computer. Unlike a computer though, instead of linear processes, a brain uses lateral and associative thinking to allow simultaneous processing, making the human mind more creative and complex. Although the brain (which only weighs about 3 pounds) is a processing organ, it is so much more complex than that. Emotions and “feelings of the heart” are processed through the brain.

Those who don’t agree with the computer/brain analogy will point out the differences between parallel and serial processing.  Computers are serial, human brains function in parallel. https://www.dnalc.org/view/1194-Brain-as-Parallel-Processor.html

The brainstem is the messaging center, controlling all the functions in your body. Breathing, digestion and the circulation of blood are all needed for survival. Your organs function and depend on the brain’s messages. Information is quickly processed in the brain; computers are much slower.

Disorders or diseases of the brain restrict proper function. Certain mental illnesses such as depression can also disable the brain’s function. Neurologists diagnose and treat conditions relating to the brain and nervous system. Through training and research, they are able to properly diagnose and treat the illnesses and diseases that deprive normal functioning of the brain.

Thomas Heric served as Assistant House Physician at the National Hospital for Nervous and Mental Diseases, Queen Square London, England from July 1969 to December 1970.

Thomas Heric - The Neurologist

Thomas Heric chose neurology as his specialty in the medical field. It is not surprising that he chose this specialty, given his great interest in science and transmissions of scientific nature. Neurologists diagnose and treat illnesses or diseases affecting the brain, nervous system and spinal cord. Thomas Heric received four years of training at the Brain Research Institute (BRI), University of California Los Angeles.  He earned his Ph.D. in neurophysiology.

The expertise of a neurologist is needed in many disorders. An example of this would be Parkinson disease. This disease affects movements and speech. Hand tremors are usually the first sign of Parkinson’s. The success of the treatment pertaining to this disease often is determined by how early it is detected.

Parkinson disease progresses over time killing the nerve cells in the brain that control movement. The targeted cells with this disease are the cells which produce dopamine. Dopamine is a brain chemical that acts as a neurotransmitter sending signals to other cells in the brain. Without the production of dopamine your muscles can’t receive the message from your brain to move.

Parkinson’s disease can’t be cured. Constant research and development regarding Parkinson’s has led to improving the medications used in treating the symptoms. How well the medications will work depends on each person. Adjustments to the medication can improve how long it lasts in treating the symptoms. If left untreated, this disease will get worse and may lead to an early death.

Victims of Parkinson disease can seek out treatment from a neurologist such as Thomas Heric.

Thomas Heric - Rem Sleep Behavior Disorders

Thomas Heric served as Medical Director for South Bay Diagnostic Medical Group and New Century Sleeping Disorder Laboratory. He is a Member of the British Sleep Society (BSS) and The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

A person who suffers from RBD physically or verbally acts out their dream.  Many times injury can result from the actions of a person suffering with this condition so proper diagnosis and treatment is imperative.

Sleep, as we know it, involves three important transitional states.
  • Wakefulness
  • N-REM sleep (non-rapid eye movement)
  • REM sleep (rapid eye movement, when most dreaming occurs)

In an RBD patient, the brain is not successfully separating these stages of sleep. This causes the actions of wakefulness to cross over into the REM and N-REM stages. A person without RBD would remain still while sleeping, but patients with RBD move around and sometimes even become violent.

Patients have been known to shout, grab, kick and punch during sleep which can cause injury to themselves or their sleep partner. They may even suddenly leap or jump out of bed which can also cause injuries. RBD can sometimes be linked to other medical problems, you need to have a medical exam from a neurologist to properly diagnose the disorder.

A sleep study is often used in diagnosis of RBD. It records arm and leg movements, brain waves, breathing patterns and heartbeat during sleep. Videos of your sleep study will record whether or not you actually get out of bed. As Thomas Heric knows, very successful treatment for RBD is available and brings relief to patients suffering from this disorder.

Thomas Heric - Tips For Getting A Novel Published

In addition to being a noted neurologist, Thomas Heric is also a published author who has written both fiction and non-fiction pieces. One of the biggest challenges that prospective authors face is finding companies that are willing to publish their work, so try to keep the following in mind to ensure your book has the best possible chance of actually being published.
Thomas Heric

Quality Writing
Publishers receive thousands of manuscripts during the course of each year and they rightfully expect that they will be written to a certain standard of quality before they even stand a chance of being read through in more detail. As such, it is crucial that you redraft your book repeatedly to ensure that it is free of the sorts of mistakes that may prevent it from being read.

Know Your Niche
Publishers are also often genre-specific, which could result in a lot of wasted time if you try sending your thriller novel through to a publisher that specializes in non-fiction. As such, you should take the time to research various publishers, so that you can find the ones who best serve the genre that you write in. This will mean that you get more useful feedback from publishers who will actually be interested in your work.

Don’t Fear Rejection
Thomas Heric understands that many new authors will have to deal with short and sharp rejections from many publishers before getting their first works are released. This means that they need to develop thick skins, while also being capable of acting on any constructive criticism that they receive from publishers.

Thomas Heric - The Qualities A Medical Professional Must Possess

Thomas Heric is a retired neurologist who worked for many years as a doctor, providing care to patients through his own private practice. This also gave him the opportunity to work with many other medical professionals from a range of specializations during his career. The following are all common qualities that you tend to find in anybody who works in medicine.

Strong Communication Skills

Medical professionals must be strong communicators who are capable of talking to people on a variety of levels. Not only must they be able to communicate with fellow professionals, often while using medical terminology, but they must also be able to simplify complex issues so that they can speak to patients and help them to understand their conditions and what is being done to help them.

A Thirst For Knowledge

The medical profession is constantly evolving, with new discoveries and research being published in practically every field of medicine almost daily. As such, those who wish to provide the best possible care to their patients must stay abreast of the latest developments in their fields, else they will find that their knowledge bases start to fall behind and they offer poorer care.

Logical Thinking

Thomas Heric understands that hospitals and other medical facilities can often be very emotional places, especially when scared patients and relatives are taken into account. As such, medical professionals need to be able to think logically in all situations, keeping their heads clear of emotion so that they can decide on the best courses of action.

Thomas Heric - Tips For Improving As A Writer

Having spent the majority of his career as a neurologist, Thomas Heric encountered a number of interesting challenges when he started to write books. While he had experience in contributing to scientific papers, the process of writing content that could keep more general audiences engaged excited him and led to him developing and improving as a writer. The following tips should prove useful to anybody who wants to do the same.

Thomas Heric

Write Constantly

Many new writers make the mistake of thinking that they only need to write when inspiration strikes them, especially when they are writing works of fiction. However, this can serve to dull their skills and results in no actual work being done. Instead, try to write something every day, even if you think it is of low quality. It can always be edited at a later date.

Treat It Like A Job

Writing can become a chore, especially when you are trying to redraft your work to make improvements. When this happens, you need to get into the mindset that writing is like a job. This will motivate you to keep going and to make the improvements that make it more likely that our work will be published.

Analyze Good Writers

Thomas Heric has published a number of works over the years and notes that fellow writers can often be rich sources of inspiration. Read constantly and pay special attention to works and passages that engage you. Analyze them and try to figure out what it is that made them so appealing, so you can apply the same thought processes to your own writing.
